Heathrow Terminal 5

WHAT'S IN THE AIR YOU BREATHE?

Air pollution is a major problem in west London as toxic cocktails are served up from aircraft, motorways and local roads :

high levels of health-threatening Nitrogen Oxides are produced when aircraft take off

smogs can surround the airport in warmer weather when sunlight reacts with fumes to form dangerous Ozone gas at ground level

tests in residential areas near the busy A4/M4 corridor have found air quality consistently breaching national air quality standards, which have been set to protect human health

For more information read What's in the air you breathe?

T5 would make the problem worse by increasing the number of flights and by encouraging huge amounts of extra road traffic.

Poor air quality goes far beyond the local area. Flying at high altitudes pollutes the upper atmosphere and damages the Ozone layer while Carbon Dioxide emissions contribute to global Climate Change. Air transport is the fastest growing source of these emissions.
