Hurricane disaster highlights global warming threat ...

Our remit does not extend to the social and political dimensions of the hurrucane Katrina and the destruction of New Orleans. But we feel it is very important to remind people that global warming is expected to lead to more extreme weather conditions, such as more frequent and more severe hurricanes. Tragically, there is a virtual conspiracy by governments, especially the US, to ignore the link. This is undoubtedly for political reasons - the US and British governments do not wish the population at large to realise that their policies are leading us towards environmental disaster. What on earth will it take to get to get our government to act on global warming? Judging by the US, where hundreds of deaths and a bill of $200 billion are not enough, quite a lot more! In the last few weeks (early Seo 05), there has been evidence that Tony Blair is doing a U-turn, moving to the Bosh policy of not doing anything effective to address the issue. The Campaign Against Climate Change said "He now appears to be no longer backing mandatory emissions cuts but is moving towards the Bush position which just encourages voluntary 'incentives". This is a recipe for no effective action at all and global suicide. Blair is now in the process of betraying all those who are working to save our planet from ecological catastrophe, and more importantly all those who will come after us on this planet," Strong words indeed, but they seems justfied. Further comments on the issue, including a speech by Tony Blair and some letters, are reproduced in Blair U-turn page.
