Climate Camp near Heathrow |

A new sort of holiday camp is coming to town! From 14th to 21st August there will be a ‘climate camp’ somewhere near Heathrow. This will include a day of action on 19th Aug. The first UK climate camp was held by the Drax power station. The aim of climate camps is to highlight the largest producers of greenhouse gases and to give ordinary people the opportunity to find out more and make their voices heard.
Aviation already contributes some 13% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and is the fastest increasing source. See one-page briefing sheet a dozen things you should know about UK aviation. Aviation threatens to wreck the UK’s obligations to reduce greenhouse gases. See Friends of the Earth press release on the Tyndall report. This refers to a report that can be downloaded (but note that the report is 6 Mbytes). Heathrow aircraft are responsible for about a third of all the UK’s aviation emissions and emit about 13 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) every year. The programme for the climate camp can be found on the climate camp web site. LinksFor more on climate change see energy and climate page. For more on aviation see aviation page.
