BAA is proposing to build a gigantic new terminal
near Heathrow - Terminal 5. This would be the biggest structure ever built
on Green Belt land and would cause a major increase in traffic, congestion, noise,
air pollution, health risks and danger.
A Public Inquiry was held into Terminal which finished in March 1999. This was the longest Public Inquiry ever in this country, which reflected the enormous public concern about the issue. Thousands of local inhabitants, dozens of community groups and most of the local councils have objected to the plans for T5. West London Friends of the Earth (WLFoE), the Non Governmental Organisation which has presented the widest range of evidence to the Public Inquiry, has called the scheme The first great monument to unsustainability of the 21st century. This is in contrast to the architect Richard Rogers, the architect who lectures us about sustainability yet describes T5 as the first great building of the 21st century . But, then, Richard Rogers is the architect designate for T5 ! See the briefing below produced by WLFoE which explains some of the issues surrounding T5 and why we and so many others are opposed to T5. . |
